Light of the Arava

A menorah of hope and healing, inspired by a quote by Leonard Cohen

Sometimes a project carries significance beyond its physical form. Not because of its scale, but because of its purpose.

The Arava Menorah was created for Hanukkah 2024 following a clear and focused brief: to design an accessible menorah and enable its light to reach as many people as possible. Behind this brief stood a deeper mission - supporting healing and recovery.

All proceeds from the project were dedicated to NATAL, an organization that provides care and support for trauma survivors of national based attacks. From the outset, the project was defined not only by aesthetics, but by the symbolic role of light as a representation of resilience, hope, and continuity.

The menorah’s form is inspired by the contours of the State of Israel and is etched with the silhouette of the desert acacia tree - NATAL’s emblem. Light passes through the tree, suggesting strength emerging through fractures and challenges. Integrated into the design is a Hebrew translation of Leonard Cohen’s line:

“There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”

A phrase that serves as both poetic reference and guiding principle.

The project was realized in collaboration with Design Terminal and The Orange Heart, a therapeutic factory that supports individuals coping with mental health challenges by enabling a return to routine and meaningful work.

During Hanukkah, the Arava Menorah became more than an object of ritual. It functioned as a shared symbol of connection, healing, and purpose - extending its light beyond the holiday itself.
